I have worked with several adult students that just cant read. This confuses me because they do have high school diplomas that states they have met all "requirements" by the state to graduate. Isnt reading a requirement? Unfortunately its seems the answer is simply NO. Problem is what is the future of a auto repair tech. that cant read? For now all I can do is accomidate them with whatever IEP they are allowed. Mostly it requires that we read testing materials to the student. We also are not allowed by rule to ask them if they have a disability, so this sets up another problem. How do you know without asking. Fortuanately our school has counslers for this purpose so I simply Email them and let them do the job they are trained for. I can only use my best judgement in the classromm.
