I've found giving out a practice test, doing a good review and express positive encouragment always help to reduce test anxieties.
Melissa,
yes, this is a great idea because, as you point out, it helps prepare the students for what's coming. Also, if my students have not had me for a class, they don't know how I test or ask questions, so the quizzes help prepare them for my testing style.

I also agree with removing the distractions. I also like asking the students pre questions before letting student take test. It helps get there confidence up.
I use to have test anxiety when i was in school. I knew the material just the pressure of me wanting a perfect score would make me draw a blank. I think that if my instructors or teachers had maybe gave me little quizzes here and there i would have been more comfortable come test time. Claudia i think that is a great idea.
Melissa,
these strategies are often very helpful for students who may struggle with testing anxiety.

I find it can help to let them take the quiz apart from other students (we have a library and tutoring lab) or take the quiz orally one on one after class.
Crystal,
this is a great way to set the good anticipation of tests & help students start processing this early on so they are prepared.

On every first day of a new class, I review how I will be giving tests/quizzes, including the type of questions and the fact I don't put a time limit on either,as long as the test taking time is within reason. I also allow them to move to a part of the room where they may feel more comfortable when taking the test.
quiz her at the end of every class a reassure her .
emphasized that if she gets a good average during quiz she should be able to repeat the mode at test time
