Review the Fetal Monitering Strip on the board, What is the best intervention for this type of FHR pattern?

Allen,

This si a very good question. I find that students appreciate real-worl situations in classes.

Judy Mohammed

After covering several types of oxygen devices in the class, I bring my students into the lab and present them with a real life scenereo, using the simulator patient. I will give them a brief history of the patient and current signs and symptoms and ask them what oxygen device they would use if this where their patient. They are required to not only choose the correct device, but also are required to apply it correctly to the patient.

Brian,

This is interesting. This is really hands on and applications.

I've taught classes for students who will be working in the field as desktop support technicians within the IT field. There are a multitude of questions and scenarios which are application based, almost everything within the field requires some sort of direct application of a concept. I mock up failures with a computer and have the students apply their knowledge of the system to troubleshoot and fix the problem. As they troubleshoot, they are also to ask me (the "user")certain questions which will better enable them to fix the problem. So in a sense they are asking application questions in reverse in the course of troubleshooting.

Robert,

That's great! Keep up the excellence!

Judy:
Yes, I have used this question often in my classes throughout the years. I find that it helps students understand that the process is important to support clear and concise communication within their own organizations, and is not simply "theory" that is difficult to apply.

Robert,

Good example. Do you use this question in your classes?

Judy Mohammed

Based on our discussion of the APA writing style, how does adhering to a particular composition format help you communicate more clearly and consistently? Use specific examples in your response.

Bernie,

This is a very good technique. At first the students may be hesitant and when they work with other students in groups, they become more secure in what they are doing. They may also see other students struggling and may even be able to assist some of them.

One thing I've found is that initally students have a hard time handling these questions. So teaching IT class, I've found that first putting them in groups to answer an application question, then having the group come up with answers gives the student an opportunity to come up with an answer together. Later when I ask question of individuals, they now have a "guide" to use to formulate answers on their own.

Sue ,

This is a great teaching technique, to keep the converoersation going during the demo. They can ask questions and you can ask questions. For example, why do you think we do it this way? or can you thionk of any other methods we can employ?

Judy Mohammed

The application process that I use in the dental class I teach is very similar. A procedure is demonstrated to the class, using various instruments and materials. The students follows along with their notes and can ask questions as the demonstration continues. The student has time to practice, review and study the procedure that was presented to them. Once the student feels that they have mastered the skill/procedure, they then will apply it to a real-life situation that would take place in a dental practice.

Sean,

Open-ended questions is a great way to promote interaction in classes.

Judy Mohammed

I have used the same format as Ariana and find it to really open up the class to 'think out loud' on topics! (I teach Physiology and Anatomy)
BTW great example...

Gary,

It is because of your experience that you have developed this technique, which works very well in your class. teaching is an ever learning and improving process and this is what makes it interesting and gets us so involved.

Judy Mohammed

I teach a class in bodywork that the student learns to do the opposite of what they have typically done all their life. It is to soften when encountering resistance. So, I have them first feel for the resistance, and then respond to it in the way they have relearned, and notice the results.

Amy,

D o you mind sharing one of your application questions with us?

Judy Mohammed

Well I teach Medical Coding and my application questions involve looking up the guidelines, and pulling information from records to give me the codes that would tell me what they have picked up with using their books.

Ariana,

This is a great application question. Do you use it in your classes?

Judy Mohammed
