A patient arrives to the office with a second degree burn on his left arm. He is conscious, breathing normal and denies any respiratory burns. Based on our class discussions on medical emergencies, what will you do next?

Wilfred,

Good! Do you use questions often during lectures?

Judy Mohammed

Thomas,

Good application question! Do you use questions during lecture?

Judy Mohammed

NEAL,

This is a great technique. Do you ask questions during your demonstrations? Sometimes, you find out a lot about your students this way (who knows what).

Judy Mohammed

After studing OHMs law,I ask my students what would happen to current flow if voltage remains constant but resistance increases.

Class, In this circuit we have a 12 volt power supply and a 10 ohm resistance. What is the current flowing in this circuit?

In the courses that i teach we start in the classroom and explain how to do a task. then they get a chance to go to the lab and try out what they have been studying. but after that instead of questioning them i put a 'bug' into the system and they need to apply what they have been working on to solve/find the bug. as they come to me with their answers is when i go one step more by asking them how can they prove they are right.
as a footnote most, but not all, students enjoy this type of class.

Anthony,

Great application question! These questions help us to guage understanding and ensure that students receive correct information.

Judy Mohammed

I have students look at a refrigeration schematic, one they have studied extensively. I then ask to determine where in the system refrigerant will be evacuated from after performing a particular process which they will already have been taught to do.

Edward,

Great technique! This is a good way to get them to use or develop their critical thinking skills.
Judy Mohammed

I teach a class on Manual Transmissions. We discuss "Torque Multilpication through gearing" I ask the class to give me examples of other things (beside a transmission) that would use gearing or gear ratios. This gets them thinking. Most forget about mechanical wrist watches. This is a digital age.

Errik,

Great example! Do you utilize other types of questions?

Judy Mohammed

Being a physicist many of our classroom type questions are comprehension but often real world scenarios present themselves in which calls for an application question.

An example that we may use clinically is:

Knowing the Tg-51 protocol please calibrate the linear acclerator beam and provide us with your results.

ibrahim,

This is a good example of an application question. These lead to great critical thinking skills and keep the students engaged.

Judy Mohammed

Ernest,

I like to use open ended questions during demos - questions like, "who knows what comes next?" or "can anyone tell me why we did it this way?" or "can you think of another way to complete this step?" I find that it keeps them thinking and engaged.

Judy Mohammed

hello
i am anesthesia instructor and here is one of the questions

Always perform a leak test on fiberoptic scope before and after cleaning.

A. True
B. False

My classroom format involves a short lecture that provides mostly technical and background information, followed by a demonstration of tecnique, followed by student application. I currently employ open questions during reviews and exams that require critical thinking skills. Would there be any value in incorperating open questions during the demo phase, or should open questions be used only after they have observed thr technique?

Barry,

Great! Just the outcome of the recipe would be an application. You may also ask how the recipe might be affected if you substitute low-fat or sugar-free products.

Judy Mohammed

Actually, in my nutrition classes. Our quesitons are more like experiments.

If you were handed this recipe, and you were asked to apply the present requirments of RDA and the guidelines for this institution to the recipe... How would you apply these principles to a particulary recipe? After preparing this recipe, how do the reactions of your classmates affect your suggestions?

Daniel,

This is a great example of an application question. It is great to acquire knowledge but even greater to learn how to apply the knowledge.
