Lecture

I like to call on various students during lecture in order to keep everyone engaged.

Robert,

I build in appropriate questions as well as humor in my lesson plans. I change the humor often though.

Judy Mohamme,

While I avoid straight, uninterrupted lectures, when I must provide a large amount of information, I always make sure to probe for information prior to providing it. I make sure to "build in" time for this interaction as I am designing my lesson plans

Martin,

This appears to be a great way to employ questioning in the classroom.

Judy Mohammed

During lecture I will ask a question to the class and allow someone to answer. Then I will call on a student and ask them a follow up question to try to make sure everyone is paying attention and engaged.

Francis,

This seems like a good technique. You give them enough time to think about the question before bringing it back to the class. It is also good for getting students to work in groups.

Robin,

This is very true; however, we want to get that student involved. So I deliberately ask questions for which they will know the answer just to get them in teh habit of responding. many times, they open up and begin participating more. I also use probing to guide them to the answers.

I like to engage various groups by asking comprehension and open questions concerning the topic being discussed. often i will write questions on a piece of paper and in their group ask for them to think about that question through the day and at the end have them stand up and ask the class. the discussions amoung all students is interesting.

I try to read the facial expressions and body language of the students and call on those students who have something to say, or would like to give the answer. Purposely calling on someone who clearly doesn't know the answer or ridiculing students who may not understand the topic is an excellent way to alienate your adult learner.

Kris,

This is very true. Students enjoy hands on activities like doing demonstrations.

Judy Mohammed

Calling on them to not only answer questions, but to have them teach a certain idea can also keep them very aware.

John,

I am sure it makes a very interactive and enjoyable class, as long as you get in your material.

Judy Mohammed

If I ask a student to answer a question I will wait for the answer then ask another student if they agree with the answer. Sometimes this will start a debate over who has the most correct answer it can often get the entire class involved

Denise,

This is a very good technique. We do not want to scare away students with questions, so we always offer praise.

Judy Mohammed

I try and incorporate different ways of questioning to keep the class engaged in the lecture and involved in the discussion. I ask the question and call on one particuar student to answer and if they seem to be having trouble I ask another student or the class to help them out. I wills ay something encouraging to the first student such as "you're on the right track" or "lets dig a little deeper". This seems to motivate student number one tosearch for the answer and gives theclass an opportunity to help out.

Jackie,

It certainly does. I like that you draw from their experiences, because they come with so much of it.

Judy Mohammed

George,

Sometimes, I deliberately call on someone who is not paying attention. This helps to get my message across and often works to bring them back to the topic.

Judy Mohammed

I try to keep my students guessing about calling on them to answer questions and or to respond to any past expiernces on the lecture subject! I think this keeps them on there toes.

I usually pose a question to the class and allow them to answer, it helps to see who's paying attention and to be able to see who needs more motivation on the subject

Gregory,

Do you find this method very effective? It gives them an opportunity to think and recall prior information.
