asking questions

Asking questions is a great way to see if the class is grasping the material and leave opportunity for other students or yourself to elaborate on the subject giving everyone a better understanding by hearing how other student interpret what they got out of the material.

DeShaun,

That's great. I use questioning all the time and I find it very effective.

I ask open and closed questions to my students. Probing and redirection are also used a lot. During lab exercises is where this really helps learning and retention.

Michael,

So those are some great reasons why questioning is a very effective tool in the classroom.

I always ask my students questions when covering the chapter material. this lets them engage in a conversation about the subject at hand and allows me to guage whether or not they actually understand the subject we are discussing.

Mary,

Your techniques are very good. It sounds like you are doing a great job. Keep up the great work!

I give several presentations to students on a monthly basis. Pending on the topic I always like to ask the students what is there knowledge of the topic of discussion. I always learn how much the students may know and I learn something new from them. Once the answer is given we proceed to the topic of discussion. I do probe often and make sure all students are engaged in the conversation. Sometimes I will have student roll play on the topic because this releases tension and all can participate.

John,

Good techniques! Like we have all found, most people tend to retain infomation more through their own research. I refrain from just giving out the answers. I especially want to encourage critical thinking.

I will ask all kinds of questions about the subject being discussed, sometimes I get instant responses, other times I could give more time than should ever be needed, at this point I ask about how something be questioned works and get the students to think, generaly they come up with the answer to my questions. When doing a review I will not give the answers to my review questions, but will discuss the topic until they get the correct answer or they will go back to thier books and find what they need, this work very wel land makes them think and also READ.

Wayne,

This is quite true. Using questions is an essential technique in teaching.
