how long should you continue questiong your students

What would suggest is an appropriate time period of questioning studnets when no answers are forethcoming.

Marcos,

Students learn well in groups so this is a good exercise. I believe that students learn better when they research the answers themselves.

I allow the students to look up the answer and then have them explain. This could be individual or in groups.

Philippe,

I use probing to help the student arrive at the answer. If he/she is unsuccesful, I open the question to the class and, like you, I try to assress teh student out of class.

I try to do it couple of time if I see that the student cannot answer I will talk to him after class some time student are very child and afraid to feel ridiculous in the front of other classmate. I tell him to study specific item for the next class and ask him question

John,

When they know that you are waiting on them to respond rather than moving on, they will continue to put their thoughts together and may surprise you with very good responses.

John,

Along with this we can use probing by asking a little deeper question, penetrating the subject.

I tend to take how ever long it takes if the student is on the right track. Honestly some students may become bored while waiting but they also understand that they too may struggle at some point.

Rephrasing questions is a good way to give students more time. Being able to look at the open ended question from a different perspective might enable the student to answer correctly.

Roy,

You can try probing or calling by name. Sometimes I rephrase the question or break it into parts. Usually I get responses.
