William,
Thank you for your post. The rubrics and competency checklists provide the students with clear expectations.

I am an Allied Health Instructor in the field of Medical Laboratory Technology. Competency based assessments are not only done in the school phase of our industry but it is also performed in the workplace. It is my practice to have rubrics and competency checklists available to the student prior to any assessment. Students are allowed sufficient practice prior to the assessment. The assessment itself allows the student to demonstrate what level of mastery that they achieved on a given area. If the class is large, another instructor is usually asked to help so that the procedure is more efficient. Students are given feedback on their deficiencies and allowed to repeat the skill.
Thank you Ron for the response, I enjoy the continued education format MaxKnowledge gives and i'm sure each instructor benefits from it as well as the students they train.
Lee,
It is so true that applied arts, such as special fx makeup, do require the artist to have a thorough knowledge of their materials as well as having a deft hand. Your detailed assessment process certainly addresses all aspects of the specific skill(s) being learned and developed. Thank you for your post.
