Real life examples in lab

As a clinical coordinator I too find it useful to experiment with real life examples in lab settings. It helps the students relate to people and learn valuable skills needed in the workplace.

Nelia,

Of course, the students need to have sufficient practice on the dummy arm.

Ron Hansen, Ed. D.

In the lab setting, as in Hematology Lab, doing the actual procedure will reinforce the lessons learned by listening to lectures and by reading the topics. Example is venipuncture. Demonstrating venipucture on a dummy arm may not the same as venipuncture on the real veins.

Marvin,

DO you have images or physical examples to show?

Ron Hansen, Ed. D.

I to frequently use examples in lab that I have experienced in the shop. Many times I can give examples of the consequences of not following the rules and proceedure. Being in the shop as many years as I have, I have witnessed many things being done the wrong way. These examples gives the student a way to relate to what can go wrong

Chad,

In most career skills it is required that the instructor has worked in the field of study they are teaching.

Ron Hansen, Ed. D.

I agree 100%. Real life examples and experiences can help the student relate to the subject matter or how it can effect his or her career. I feel it is a real asset to the class if have worked in the field of study you are teaching.

Michael,

That is the value you bring to the curriculum. Real world experience.

Ron Hansen, Ed. D.

I like to use real life examples because if they hear what happened to you in a situation then the students understand why it has to be done a certain way.

Scott,

Bringing the real world into the classroom supports the lessons.

As a computer repair instructor, I recieve computer's in need of repair, from many sources. In leading the class and calling on the class to use the knowledge they have learned, we repair the machine. This offers students in the class the ability to see how to protect a clients data and privacy. This also allows them to put in pratice what they know, and provide addition information on different repair software, and/or techniques that the course may only touch on.

As a lab and lecture instructor I'm offten trying to give my lecture class real life experiences. Then in my lab class its easier since we have hands-on projects.

Audie,

Repetition helps the student to master skills.

Ron Hansen, Ed. D.

The best education is for them to get out of real life examples, is that they can do the hands on task sucessfuly. They are the ones that have to have the hands on to get it all of the time or every time the preform the task. Like an example is torquing a cylinder head back on the engine block by the proper method.

Suzanne,

Yes it does. The real world examples truly connect with the students.
