Student Assessment
How do you determine if your students have acquired the competencies required in the field for which they are training?
Explain that you may have misunderstood the question and then go over it with the student in detail and explain how to do it the correct way
Jennifer,
Do you have pass rate data?
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
At MMTC, we have a competency checklist that each student is tested on after that competency has been taught. The student has 3 chances to pass.
Scott,
The different methods used do appeal to different learning styles. Thank you.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
They must demonstrate competency through practical testing. Their techniques and final outcome are tasted and evaluated. There are also written exams to see whether they can explain the steps used to make certain dishes.
Our comp scores are based on several learning styles. The student must perform troubleshooting on an engine based on on-lon, disc, and lecture training given during that period. Reading carefully and slowing down are a few of the pitfalls that we see a lot of during our qualifying
Albert,
Yes it is. Assessing projects they work on is a very good assessment technique.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Maria,
Have the students work in groups to develop their own review questions. You are already going in that direction.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Ultimately some type of hands on test must be used. The other option is to make sure any project or task the students perform is fully functional when they complete their project There must be some method of determining success or less than that. Assessment is important in a trade based curriculum.
I will review the question with the class to identify if they understand the question. sometimes it is the manner in which the question is written which confuses the students. then i give them the correct answer & explain why that answer is correct. If it still does not make sense to the student then i ask them how would they better phase the question so they will give me the correct answer.
Jeff ,
A good method for sure.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Timothy,
How do you address any issues when you find several students answering the same question wrong?
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
The true blue way to view a students competencies in the field they are training in is by asking them what are you going to do and why before they try anything tangible.
based on live testing on equipment and also I like to interact with the students and ask questions when I am checking there work to ensure they have the best understanding possible.
