Flipped Classroom Theories

Which theory that has influenced the flipped classroom can you relate to the most?

In our field of personal training, experimental is very helpful as sometimes you have to experiment with different training modalities and protocols

Being able to have students prepared for the subject matter. As well have a few questions at the beginning of class is great. Another point to be able to come into a course already seeing the instructor and having lecture done with. The student is on another level of comfort and Abe to excel in there learning.

In the classes I teach giving the student more responsibility for how he/she approaches the task at hand will give them the ability to think out side the box with positive feed back.

Diona,

Since Constructivism means they create their own reality, does this mean you decide what they need to know or do they?

Dr. Moody Crews

Constructivism is the theory I relate to most being a Cosmetologist. Have to do it to make sure they know it.

The Constructivist idea is an intriguing one: it reminds me a bit of how rock musicians commonly refer to their gaining knowledge of their instrument by simply watching their peers or, these days, viewing videos and picking up the basics, which they then build upon. It is often a slightly unorthodox approach that suits their individuality. This is a distinct difference with a classically trained musician, who spends countless hours with a tutor/teacher refining the theory and practicing proper technique. Both can produce accomplished musicians, but the routes to the goal can be strikingly different.

Angela,

True. Oh, how I could use a massage right now. :)

Dr. Moody Crews

Hannah,

Very true. I'm sure working with animals is a very rewarding job.

Dr. Moody Crews

As a massage therapy instructor I like experimental learning. It allows the students to come in and apply what they learned from reading as well as giving me an insight as to how their mind perceived the information and if they are on the right track or need more direction.

I can really relate to Experiential Learning, because I work in a non-traditional setting where most of our work is based on interaction with animals. Having the students able to review the intentional content at home would truly allow much more time for them to experience the animal interactions, and even more importantly, more time for us to build upon their experiences during F2F discussions and projects.

Philip,

Good. Think about how you would use problem-based learning in your classroom to help your students learn how to take those skills outside the classroom.

Dr. Moody Crews

Being a mathematics instructor, problem-based learning is the theory that relates to my subject matter the most. One may know all of the basic skills to complete a task, but if that person has no idea how to take that skill outside the classroom and use it to solve problems, those known skills are not really effective.

Earle,

Good choice. I wonder how experiential learning looks in your class. Is it always the same or do you change it up to keep student interest?

Dr. Moody Crews

Lisa,

Absolutely. The flipped classroom just makes sense. Every day there is more to learn so we have to come up with new ways of learning that gives us more time for obtaining the knowledge we need.

Dr. Moody Crews

Lucille,

I could not agree more that immersion is the most effective way of learning.

Dr. Moody Crews

V.,

I agree. Have to thought about how you think constructivism helps students make connections.

Dr. Moody Crews

Christen,

I agree. I am also somewhat of a constructivist myself.

Dr. Moody Crews

Pilar,

It is difficult to decide what's most important to teach in a two hour class session. You are also correct that there will always be some students who will "get it" no matter what we do; however, that's certainly not always the case. The flipped classroom make huge strides in changing this.

Dr. Moody Crews

I would choose Experiential Learning. The idea is to provide a learning environment where student can apply the information they reviewed on their own and see how it relates to their understanding.
