Future of the Flipped Classroom
Do you believe the flipped classroom will be a fix for learning in the classroom or just a fad?
If anything it would depend on the subject matter. For the most part though I would go more with the FAD!
While I think the term "fad" might be inaccurate, the pace of technology and education are so mercurial that "flipping" the classroom might look and sound like something else very soon. Calling it an evolving classroom might be better.
I think the Flipped Classroom is here to stay and is a fix for students who excell, however, I agree we need more hands on activities or probelm solving project for the students who are bored or not interested in school.
No I don't feel it is a fad, I believe it can be truly developed and utilized for certain courses verus others. My wheels are already turning regarding teaching courses next semester in E-Commerce and Intro to the PC and how I can use this idea to engage students and help them master the content. I am excited about using this idea!
I do not think it is a fad, It's here to stay and instructors will continue to improve and adapt the way they approach flipping the class room.
A new teaching model should never be underestimated. My feelings is anything that can facilitate the learning process in anyway can only be seen as a positive. Here's hoping flipped classroom is more than a fad
In some programs it will be a fix due to the level of students current life styles and for other program this will not work but i do think it is the way for the new learners with other responsibilites to learn and interact with class discussions and gain a high level of knowledge.
Most definitely a fix. So long as it is used correctly for the sole benefit of the students learning. This is not a way for instructors to become lazy and let technology take over for them. When thinking about how I can implement this into my classroom, I don't think I am able to completely eventually go total flip. However, utilizing both this and traditional would be best. There may be other subjects that can, and some that can't. I think mine will most definitely benefit from this only to increase student learning and allowing classroom time for me to sit one on one with each student as they work hands on and instruct them based on what they learned in the flip method. Thank you for this.
Zach,
Absolutely. Continual assessment of our teaching is needed not matter what teaching techniques you use.

Aarti,
The idea of student ownership in the course and their learning is extremely important.
Dr. Moody Crews
Reshona,
You are correct that we are not done creating new ways of learning. Even Bloom's taxonomy, which has been around for a long time, has been revised to make it better. I'm sure the same will be true with the flipped classroom.
Dr. Moody Crews
Rebecca,
It really is an awesome teaching style. Once you get started you will not want to go back.
Dr. Moody Crews
Robert,
Good. I hope you go for it. I think you will find that not only do the students reach a higher level of learning but they will also enjoy this.
Dr. Moody Crews
BRUCE,
I think I know where you were going with the "fix". There really are no fixes there are just better ways of doing things.
Dr. Moody Crews
Robert,
I think the two key words from your response are discipline and responsibility.
Dr. Moody Crews
The only way to know for sure if the flipped classroom will be a flop is to begin to gradually implement it while constantly evaluating it. If standardized test scores improve due to this style of teaching then obviously I will look at the flipped classroom as a "fix for learning." Time will tell as to whether or not the flipped classroom is the most effective way to teach. I like the idea and can see the many positives regarding this method. In today's society, with all of the technology available to us, our everyday social skills are diminishing, especially amongst our youth. The flipped classroom encourages active learning and social interaction/communication. This is necessary for not only being successful in the classroom but for being successful in life, too.
I don't believe it is a fad. I believe that the flipped classroom will enhance student-learning, and give students a sense of ownership as they will be accountable for how much learn during the course of the class.
The way technology is improving so quickly I believe this will be the next big thing until the next big thing. We are not done innovating new ways of learning and teaching. Who knows what will happen in the coming years to make the flipped classroom a thing of the past.
I think the flipped classroom would be a great tool for some students and some subjects. I would love to see more of it implemented and see some of the results posted. It is the most exciting strategy I have encountered.
