retention

I find that the more relaxed the instructor is with their information which they wish to relay the easier it is to absorb. Tension is good to the extent of a student being fully alert. But it is not good to have excess tension because it becomes the focus instead of the material.

James,
Your connection with your students via the fact that you are letting them know that you sat where they are sitting. You are a former student yourself and that you lived through the student years. You are a model for them to observe and this helps them to see themselves as being successful in the field before very long.

I always make sure to reinforce that I was where the studemts are not long ago. This helps them to believe that the information is manageable and relevant. I use plain language as much as possible and tell stories to make necessary points.

The more confident and knowledgable the instructor the more likely the student will be attentive and interested in the class and class material. I relaxed learning environment seems to be helpful as well

I agree, applying real life events and experiences also help students retain information

I agree the more relaxed a student appears in the class due to the instructor and thier attitude the more the student looks forward to coming to class and learning.

I agree and I also make sure to relate the information to real life situations.
