Good approach. I teach a required general course so I understand the challenges you have in getting each student to see the value of the course and how it applies to them and their future. I always feel good when I have a student say "now I see the value of what you are teaching in relation to my field". Surprise, surprise. That is why I teach the course but I have to convince them of the value each time I teach it.
