I try to deliver my course content in different ways. But now having a better understanding of all the different intelligences, I will diversify a little bit more, as to cover more of the learning types.

Understanding the theory of multiple intelligences allows adaptability in methodology. It is essential to reach each student in a manner that they are capable of processing. Having an insight into the individual's informational processes allows you to target each individual and cater to their specific learning style. Over all your instructional delivery should facilitate delivery methods that engage each of the intelligences and learner specific processing of information. To be capable of reaching today's learners you must remain flexable and adaptable to the class learning dynamic.

James,
I like your formula because my own experience in teaching technical content has been this blend and it has been successful. The more students have different ways of approaching their learning of content and making applications the greater their competence is going to be at the end of the course.

Dr. Faulk,
Well said because each of us happens to be unique and as a result we process information differently. The more understanding we instructors have about the different intelligences the more accurately we are going to be able to target our instructional delivery.

With an understanding of multiple intelligences I think my current methodology is meeting the needs of the students. I routinely try to cover varies learning preferences, â– Auditory, Written, â– Visual Kinesthetic. I been a technical Instructor for close to 13 years, my experience is always telling make the lesson/lecture very visual couple that with just the right amount auditory, then a big dose of practice for the tactile section.

Understanding multiple intelligences can make the classroom, whether face to face or virtual, an exciting and engaging place of learning. Varying the ways the material is presented as well as the way students interact can offer the opportunity for everyone in the classroom to learn in ways suited to their learning style.

Dr. Faulk

Utilizing different methods of presentation will help students utilize their different intelligences.

It is important to identify and develop
the potentials of our students by integrating
multiple intelligences in our teaching
contents and strategies. It is a holistic
approach of teaching.

Carol,
I agree because it certainly plays an important part in the learning process.

Holly,
Sounds like you have had some wonderful instructors in your past that have influenced how you want to educate your students. By building on these models I know you are going to continue to have success with your students.

Emotional intelligence should also be considered as well as Gardner's other six.

I always try to include the different methods for different learning styles.

I enjoy seeing the diferent ways my students learn, and the challenge to get them all to learn a new skill is something I find really exciting. The process just helps me become a better instructor, since I am using all my skills and learning preferences to develop new and interesting ways to present information. I hated having instructors just drone on in lecture for hours at a time, not understanding that some of us needed visual or hands-on to get the point across.

Kelly,
By thinking about them you can use some of your creativity to identify and use different delivery strategies that will appeal to the different intelligences. This sets up an environment that benefits everyone.

Thinking about these multiple intelligences will make me more aware of how I approach my students in their style of learning.

Richard,
Humor and videos can go a long ways in getting concepts across to students when you are limited in equipment and/or labs. I commend you for your willingness to reach out and secure resources that are available to you while getting your students focused on what they need to learn. Well done!

James,
Good point and one we need to remember as instructors. When we do reflect on their learning preferences it is an opportunity to customize our instruction to meet their learning needs.

I find that more students are reached, but it takes more effort--not that this should be an excuse not to try. Sometimes technology helps; in a recent physics class I realized that just reading discussing concepts was too narrow, using math didn't reach everyone, and with a lack of equipment to demonstrate people weren't seeing results (it was a very simple class). So I started showing You Tube videos of experiments, sometimes silly ones (people running into each other to demonstrate Newton's Laws of Motion, or cartoons of General Relativity). That seemed to help a lot.
