Levels of learning

When you have a wide range of learning styles in a classroom. one teaching style doesn't work.

Mark,
Very sound advice for all instructors to follow. We need to focus on how we can customize our instruction to meet the needs of our current students. This is one of the challenging yet very rewarding parts of our job.

Agreed and sometimes this does appear/feel like searching in the dark without a flashlight. However, when you do find that way that the students do absorb you would want to be wary of falling into the "it worked on group A, therefore, it will work on ALL groups" trap.

Mixing things up, not only keeps the students fresh but the teach as well.

I agree with different ways to deliver information to students. Writing on the board, lecturing, giving handouts, showing pictures, or diagrams helps all the students get the information, and hopefully retain it.

This i find very true. This is when we as instructors are challenged in finding new creative ways that adapt to all our students.

Tracy,
I have used this method as well and I always look forward to the presentations. It is amazing as I am sure you have found out the creativity of the students and how they share their topics. Great fun on those class days.

Occasionally in my classroom, I do a "be the teacher" project. Each student is assigned a specific topic from the course we are studying and on the assigned day they must get up in front of the classroom and be the teacher of their topic. They are allowed to use any method they wish. This allows creativity on their part and creates ownership in the learning experience, as well as reinforces important topics. This method has worked well for me. (Plus it gives the students an appreciation for what we do and all the work involved.)

Kassy,
They do and when blended they offer many different ways to engage the learners.

It seems the use of multiple intelligence dovetails nicely with learning styles -- either way it's best to provide instruction that encompasses a variety of media.

true indeed you have to mix it up so that all of your students can be involved in the lecture and that all the students get a full understanding of the material.

Donald,
You sure do. What strategies that have been successful for you?

i agree you have to use different styles to get to all students

Lorraine,
Learners like variety and you are providing such. This is why you and your students are enjoying success in the classes you teach.

By using different teaching methods, I have been able to engage the students. The use of games, white board and handouts have been used and has been effective. I have also used return demonstration to test the effectiveness of the presented information and retention.

Gary,
I am sure they appreciate the time you take to talk with them individually. This helps to create rapport with them as well. Good strategy.

I like to talk with my students one on one to see how much information they have gain during there time in class.

I think this is a very good idea! I myself learn better this way! I think it is a good way to mix up your class and keep it moving along in the right direction.

Richard,
I agree because we are going to be called upon to use our different learning preferences at different times as well as in different work situations.

I feel that it is important to have multi learning styles.

I try to do different activities with the same information for all students to learn. I will lecture, work on white board, games and show hands on examples or share my life experience with the students.
