pretesting
pretesting has been fairly succesful for me to evaluate the students and see what the weaknesses are and concentrate on them with certain students
Yes, it also helps for one to see what they may need to adjust in their lesson plan or their way of teaching the subject.
Bruce,
Great to hear. This is helpful information for other instructors that may be trying to decide whether or not to use pretesting to get a baseline understanding of the knowledge and experiences that their students are bringing into the class.

Pretesting for me has greatly improved the way my class is done day by day. Different students need different teaching styles and knowing there base knowledge is so important.
William,
Good start. I have developed a pretest that is structured like a game so the students enjoy taking it the first night of class. By having it in this format I reduce the stress of them taking a "test" the first class meeting but rather they are doing an exercise that helps me know where they are at in relation to the course content. By selling it to them this way I get good input from the students.

While I have thought of pretesting as a means to see what my students know coming into the class, to have it presented as part of this module was enlightening. I need to find a way to put together pretests as I can see where it will enhance my ability to reach the class with what is most needed/desired. I already begin by asking the class at the outset what they know/would like to learn.

Pretesting can also be a study tool to help the students understand and identify their weak points.
Amanda,
I think you will like the results you get from using this strategy. It helps me to establish a baseline for the students and the tailor my instruction for them.

I have never used per-testing before. I am excited to give it a try, because it will cut down on the time it takes at the beginning of a course to evaluate the students' abilities.
Keelan,
A competency based pretest is a great way to see where each student is in his/her skill level. Yes, it is the same as a pretest and it yields good information on how to customize your instruction for those students.

in the career field that i instruct in, we do alot of on hand training. so we like to evaluate the students on their skill level so its jus the same as a pretest
Lyndi,
So do I. I get really good information about how to reinforce the learning of my students with this information.

I agree! I like to do pre-test before the chapter and after I like to do post-tests!
for example I like to test students on reading mics. This allows me to gauge my time on reviewing the reading of mics.
