reviews

We have self study assignments that we review just to make sure the student reads the lesson plan for the following day. this helps the student get an understanding of what will be covered that day.

Donna,
This is such a valuable activity for both the students and the instructor for the reason you mention. As the instructor you are getting a picture of how well you are doing in relating the material to your students and how they are acquiring the needed content. This is a win win situation for sure.

I agree with you, I do alot of lecturing, and always review the next day before I begin another topic to make sure the class understands the material before moving on. The review actually shows me how much the students are retaining.

I use review sheet and I change the their answers in to question,

Breaking up review in little chunks has been effective. After a fairly short segment of class, just ask questions about what was just covered. Also after PEs, ask what did they discover; what problems they had. Each class ends with a brief review. Reviews before big events can be more comprehensive but by this time students shouldn't be entirely dependent on these. Also I do my best to make sure they see the big picture; why are they performing these discrete tasks.

Carroll,
These two items are very important if you are going to keep students engaged. They need to be able to see where they are at in the course and how they are being successful or where they need to concentrate their efforts for improvement.

feedback and review go together, i use directed questions one for each student and then I know if they understand the material, it also adds accountability to the process. everyone knows they must know the answer.

David,
I am with you 100%. Without review I feel that I would have very little success with managing the learning of my students. Through review I achieve great results and my students are very happy with the course not to mention they walk away with a lot of knowledge and skills they will remember and use throughout their careers.

Reviewing is an integral part of the learning process. Years ago my career college told us, as instructors, we weren't allow to review. Students were somehow supposed to retain the entire lecture without any review. I argued using this example: learning someone's name. I learn all my 30 student's names in two days by using one simple tool -REVIEW.

Kisha,
This form of review helps the students to integrate the content more into their memories. So keep up this process as it is really helping them to retain the content.

i find it helpful to do an overview before the lecture over the material from the day before and then at the end of class if time allows do a quick review over the lecture from today.

I like to take the last 5 or so minutes of class and have the students tell me everything they learned in that class for the day.

I like to review at the end of each class. With certain classes, I have the time to do a cumulative review, where we review everything from day 1 to the present day. This seems to work very well.
