pretesting
I think pretesting is good for the student and the instructor because the students strengths and weakneses in the course can be identified very early.
Andric,
I use pretesting in classes as well. I like getting a baseline on my students so I can customize my instructional delivery based upon their knowledge and experience base. This approach really helps when it comes to student retention.

pretesting is always good it helps to see who already knows a little about the subject or to see who actually did their home work or studied for the up coming exam and it also helps to refresh their memory right before the exam so they can be prepared for it and not missed the stuff they already know by over thinking it
Sudarshan Daniel,
Good analysis of the value that can come from pretesting. It gives a baseline from which to operate.

pretesting makes an ideal background assessment tool to know the basic intelligence and aptitude and also gives an instructor an idea of how adept or inept student is in his/her learning abilities
Jenni,
I have been using pretesting for many years and I really like the information I get from them. They give me a baseline on the current group of students so I can then customize my instructional delivery to meet their identified needs.

I have not been pretesting so far. I can see that it would be helpful and a quick way of getting to know the students experience and knowledge.
Juan,
Having been a user of pretesting for a number of years I can say the results really help me to customize my instructional content and delivery based upon what I learn from the current group of students. As a result my students are more satisfied and engaged in the course. I know you are going to like the results you get from pretesting if you decide to use this strategy.

I don't pre-test, I will change though. My class may be isolated to some degree but I should really consider it. It's proven to be a good tool and certainly for knowing the student's capabilities.
Amy,
I am a big fan and user of pretesting for the reasons you listed. It gives me a snapshot of the class and as a result I can then customize my instructional delivery to meet their specific needs.

Pretesting allows the instructor to see strengths and weaknesses setting the stage for structuring their learning experience. I have given the final exam as a pretest. It works great!
Angela,
I use pretesting in my classes for many of the reasons that you list. The results let me target that current group of students and this way I can customize to their learning needs.

I always use pretesting when teaching a didactic course. It lets you know where all of your students educational levels stand and where you as an instructor need to spend more time. It's a great assessment tool being that sometimes students either don't realize where they are lacking or are too embarrassed to admit it.
By tailoring course content to topics in which they are not yet fluent.. it enables an instructor to spend less time on content they already know and more time on units which may be more difficult.
Joan,
So do I and for the reasons you state. The results give me a snapshot of the students I have and how I can plan their learning experiences more effectively.

I use pretesting at the beginning of every term. It really aids in preparing course content and focuses in on material that will need additional time.
Great idea!
I plan on implementing pre-testing because it will really help streamline my course contents.
Michael,
I use it in my classes for the reason you state. This way I can get a baseline on the students that I have in class and build my instruction around their needs.
