Pretest
Pretesting even if it is just asking a handful of questions out loud to the whole class helps me get them directed towards the test at had and sparks good interaction
Pretesting gives me an opportunity to assess learning and to change up delivery to to help those who are lagging.
i totally agree.pretesting also helps determine who may require additional help.
Jason,
You make a great point. Students have been trained to fear the word "test" over their schooling careers. So by using the word game you reduce their anxiety and can get them focused on the questions you are seeking answers to. Thanks for your input on this.

Nick,
Yes, it does. I use them to get a baseline on my students so I know how to customize my instructional content and delivery in a way that meets them where they are.

I like the idea of a pre-test. But, I have found it is better to avoid the word test. If you call it a test, then students want to know if there is a grade. And, if there is no grade, they tend to not put a lot of effort into it.
A game works better. Anyone use kahoot.it?
it also helps guide them to the meterial you want them focused on.
I do the same thing and agree with you James. It also gives me a base line of were certain students are what needs to be reviewed.
Michael,
Right you are. I use pretesting in my courses for the reason you state. I like having the baseline from which to work so I can plan my instruction more accurately.

Pretesting is crucial to your future exam reviews...you have to get a baseline assesment prior to
Pandora,
Right you are about the value from pretesting. I using pretesting with all of my classes so I can get a feel for the understanding and knowledge my students are bringing into the course and then customize my content and delivery from there.

George,
Good way to reduce test anxiety and help students feel comfortable in taking exams. This way when they take the scored exams they will do better and you will get a more accurate assessment of what they have learned.

As an instructor, I am a firm believer that you should pretest your courses. As the knowledge stated " your brain can on process and remember so much. I think you should pretest often and as you lecture. Ask questions.
I use the self tests given with the book , but I don't use it for a grade . I use it to let students see how much they already know about the material in the chapter.
Pretests are something I have never used as a way to gauge student preparedness. This can handicap me in dealing with classroom situations. I would to use this concept in the future.
James, I agree with you about using pretesting, it wasn't until I had been teaching a year that I started this, and it is a great tool to use as I begin my class.
Robert,
I am a big fan of using pretesting as well. I use it in all of my courses to help me create a baseline upon which I can do my instructional planning and selection. Helps to get a new course off to a good start.

Pretesting is a great way to evaluate the class as a whole and also look at the single student. it helps to plan for the class and also start working with the student that may not have the background skills to comprehend the course as well as some of the other students.
Ron,
I use pretesting as well because I want to know what my students know so I can plan accordingly. This is how I can customize to each class. By using the same test at the end of the course you are able to measure specifically how student growth as occurred.

I like to ask questions before a test of questions that are actually on the test. Theses questions are in no specific order. Sometimes I give them an actual test to do
