RETENTION OF MATERIAL
IF YOU USE A METHOD I WAS TAUGHT EARLY IN MY INSTRUCTING DAYS AND STILL USE TODAY RETENTION BY MY STUDENTS CAN BE VERY GOOD. MY METHODS: TELL THEM WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO COVER, COVER MATERIAL, TELL THEM WHAT YOU TOLD THEM,
Summerizing and reviewing or debriefing the info is the best way to learn and remember it. It works in my classroom well.
Robert,
I really like this approach. You are integrating a number of different learning strategies together and reinforcing what the students have been taught. This gives them connecting points from which they can operate as they apply their new knowledge.

I agree with the method you have mentioned. I would like to enrich the concepts by adding the following ideas. When discussing what will be covered I would provide the student with a flow map or graphic organizer that provides the key concepts and how these concepts inter-relate and are connected at a whole. When coving the materials I would provide students with a note taking sheet that identifies key concepts and words and allows students the opportunity to actively participate in decoding. Rather than telling them what I told them, I would encourage students to verbally participate in summarizing the lecture/discussion in order to recode the information. This will provide the class with varying viewpoints and perspectives that certainly will enhance their learning.
