Helping Students Retain Course Content

I beleive the key to help student retain the most out of course is by integrating new information gradually, and with repetition.

Robbie,
Good strategy to use. The more reinforcement and connection you can make the stronger the recall is going to be in the future.

I agree repetition is good I also try to make it simple by using association to things they can relate to

Kelli,
I like the variety and balance you are bringing to your classes. You are letting your students see a number of different ways they can use their learning preferences to acquire the content. This method keeps them engaged and focused on the course over a longer period of time.

I like to utiilze different mediums to deliver the course content so that I am catering to all of my students. Powerpoints are my favorite, but I also physically draw on the white board, provide outlines (so they can fill in the blanks during the lecture)and utilize role playing. Lots and lots of activities and interaction while sharing our diverse backgrounds and the topic at hand. I enjoy teaching professional adults that have real world experience. They bring their knowledge to the table and we can relate the real-world into the lectures.

It's worked well for me and is a win-win for all :)

My Best,
Kelli

Peggy,
Repetition is an essential part of teaching. The key is to find ways to repeat the content while retaining the interest of the students. This is why I use games a lot when reviewing.

I've found on many occassions that constantly repeating things does help them to remember and pretty soon they are reminding me.

Alicia,
Both, repetition and application are powerful components of retention. Internalizing the information and then applying it helps to seal it in the working memories of students for use in the future.

I also agree repetition is the key. I also try to give real-life examples. I also try t obreakdown all vocabulary, using the different meanings of all the word part or items the wors may relate to. I also require the students to use the information they have learned by role-playing when I can.

Repetition, repetition, repetition. Students will also retain information they are using so make sure they apply what you are teaching,
