INCREASING STUDENT RETENTION

My method for increasing student retention is structured and resonably successful.
#1, lecture covering key points of the lesson while writing student notes on the board and encouraging participation and questions.
#2. active student participation demo's,I demo part of an operation and then have the students duplicate what I do. When they are done we go to the next section of the operation. I think it is very important to complete one complete segment a day.
#3.Have the students "re-code" their notes.

Cecilia,
These are good strategies for keeping the students engaged and focused throughout the course. The more application you can help the students make the greater relevance they are going to see in the content. Keep up the good work.

I enjoy combining lecture with a visual like a documentary on the subject matter. For example, in A&P class after lecturing on the skeletal system and some pathologies I show a video on osteogensis imperfecta or children of glass a genetic disorder that causes brittle bone disease. This gives the student a better understanding of a genetic skeletal pathology. It also helps to play the jeporady games to help review for a test it motivates the class through competition and brings the subject matter to life.

Participation from each student is the key. I love using the green card/red card exercise to get all students to participate. When I ask questions students will hold up the green card if the answer is correct or the red card if the answer is incorrect. I count to three when I required students to hold up the cards while they close their eyes so they do not see who gets the answer wrong. This helps me to understand which students are not understanding the concepts so I can work with those students on an individual basis.

James,I totally agree with the methods you are using for your students. Our classes are divided into theory and skills.I feel if we were to integrade them would increase student retention.

Darren,
What are some strategies you use to get the students involved in class activities? Thanks for sharing on this.

having the students participate works great. keeping them involved seems to make everybodys day better, and scores seem to improve also.
