We will have each student do a task multible times. This will increase the retention more than just having the student do it once and move on.

Good strategy and good plan for your students to follow. Repetition helps students to integrate the knowledge and procedures into their working memory bank. The result is that they can recall the information and skills quickly when they are in the workplace and time is of the essence.

This statement is correct. As a clinical instructor teaching various skills, I know the importance of having each student do a task multiple times in order to increase retention of the learning material. During my lectures, I also stress the importance of continual review and continual repetition and practice.

You are giving your students the steps it takes to gain the knowledge and skills needed for success and then showing them how they can go to the next level in terms of income potential and career development. Repitition breeds effiency and confidence I always say, 3 of our 4 labs are "flat rate" graded. Each project has an "earned time" (the amount a job pays) as well as a "punch time" (the amount of time it takes to complete the job)

In my industry, in order to make "good money" a tech needs to be able to meet or beat the "flat rate" for that job.

I instruct my students to for go the "earned time" associated with the project and concintrate on the "technical" aspects of the project and "how to do it" vs the "how fast can I get it done"

Lets do the project first to learn the "how do I do it and why am I doing it this way" then we can explore the "other" ways of doing it and then decide which process best suits the student but with the same end result (6 of one and a half-dozen of the other).

Once the skill is learned and the how to exacute it, then the student can work towards increasing his effiency to the point that they meet or beat the flat rate for the given project.

I agree with you. If the students are doing things more than once it gives them a chance to get better and remember as they go.This is a great way to retain the information

Good point. By showing application and relevance the students are able to gain the needed competencies in a way that will give them an expanded skill set for the future.

I agree. In my field of education I tell my students while in lab, don't just rush through it. Look at what you are doing and tell me the relevance of each step you take and how it will affect the end result. Once they see how it brings in the final situation, it makes retention eaiser.

Good way to get the students to internalize the needed content. The more use of the information they make the more they will be able to use it out in the workplace. You are right about the fact that if they don't get it now they will never be able to expand their career options because they won't have any options.

Repeating the same task several times does help, but the student also will sometimes retain it better by knowing the relevance of the task with the course they are taking or how it will benefit them daily.

For example, in my profession, we have to not only know the tooth numbers in the mouth, but where they are.

By knowing this we are able to see when we start in on another subject that pertains to the teeth. Such as oral surgery or dental radiology. If you do not know where the teeth are located in the mouth then you will struggle with trying to take an x-ray of a particular tooth or placing the topical for the dentist to give the anesthesia prior to the treatment beginning.

Right you are about just blowing through the content. There needs to be application of the content and skills in such a way that the students will be able to see the value of the information and desire to develop the needed skill sets.

Blowing through content certainly does not help much, that I know.
