From my perspective, the greatest characteristics of a critical thinker would have to be their constant analytical approach towards any issue arising as well as their ability to evaluate the actions they take toward solving an issue.

A critical thinker pays attention to details, evaluates and assesses information, reviews all possible perspectives, before arriving at a fair judgment.
Apart from viewing a situation from different perspectives, a critical thinker should consider the moral, economic, personal, and societal impact of his/her decision. The delivery of this decison/message should be tactful and unbiased. Most importantly, the critical thinker should have the ability to reevaluate decisions if not successful.

I would say the number one characteristic I see in my son - who is a very critical thinker - is the ability to see outside the box and look at things from different perspectives - then to ask why??
Coming from a nursing background (I'm been an RN for 25 years)and now a Coordinator of CNA program, a characteristic of a critical thinker would also include someone who can think fast and on their feet. Unsuspecting things happen without warning at times and you have to have critical thinking abilities to help solve whatever problem the patient is going through.
