Reading for research papers
Students are exposed both to printed and electronic sources. They are overwhelmed by information from databases. This is when critical thinking comes to play. Which info is accurate? Which is valid? Instructors can help students discern the academic and scholarly sources.
Caron,
Good steps to have the students follow. This way they are able to sort through the literature and come up with articles that support their research. They need to be able to determine what is accurate and supportive information that will enhance their knowledge base.

Shani,
Good way to teach students to check and filter their resources. As you say everything on the internet is not true or accurate and to be able to sort through this information is very important for the students when they are out in the workplace.

I also find this helpful, I will give an assigment and tell students that why can use an online source (blogs, articles, recipes, etc) but that have to use a peer reviewed journal or article to state thier point as well.
I find by doing this students are able to see that not all infromation on the internet is correct and it helps them to use other "new" sources of infromation, so that they can compare and contrast.
Jean,
I support your approach because you are helping your students to create a foundation of knowledge and skill for themselves. They need to be able to draw upon this foundation as they mover forward in their career development. If they do not have the basics then they may come up short later on when the basics will help them move upward.

Hello. I feel that when giving assignments that require research, limiting the scope of resources to a list of pre-approved books and websites is best. As a culinary instructor, we have many students providing recipe/food information from random personal blogs, and while the author may be a true chef and a good source of info, I'd rather the student rely on proven industry professionals. At least for academic research purposes.

Fraternidad,
This is a good point because the more sources of information available the more discriminating students need to be in terms of accuracy and selection of the content that will be used for solving problems.
