Students

We get all types of students age, ethnic, disabilities. We have to adjust and Instruct to there needs. We need to cater to the class thats in front of us at that time and the next class we have will be completly different.

Hi Jeffrey,
Well said. We need to try with all our skills to reach each student. If we don't it isn't because we haven't tried to the best of our abilities. This also sets the tone for students to know that we are there to support their learning efforts if they are willing to invest the time and effort to learn.

I do beleive that other students can influence others with their actions. But classroom managment is just like motivating each student different, if we handle the bad apple carefully and work with their interest turn the apple over and you might find a good student I beleive we need to pay due dilegence with each student before we give up on them as long as we don't buy into their excuses and the teacher does not make any either.

Every class is different and we have to recognise this and make personal adjustments without lowering standards.

I enjoy and welcome the diversity. I have once taught for a social service corp. which had students ranging in age from 18 to 65, from all walks of life, from gang bangers to ex-offenders, welfare to work participants and students just looking to change careers. The number one thing I found to keep such a diverse group interested and as well motivated is RESPECT. I give it as well as demand it. Most of these types of students have never gotten respect from anyone, and when they do, it seems to quell their attitudes and refocuses them into the learning environment. And yes every class is different. Thank goodness, it would get pretty boring if every class was exactly the same.

I think we, as, Instructors at M.M.I. have more diverse classes than most schools, at least the adult education facilities I have attended. A major skill required for this job is the ability to read people not only accurately but quickly as well. I personally am adjusting instructional techniques "on the fly" to meet the needs of my particular group.

true. we have many diffrent students with diaabilities, ages, ethnicity. and as instructors we need to find a way to reach out to them.one of the biggest issues I have seem is the language barrier. some of the training tapes and videos (DVD'S) are now offering diffrent subtitles. but its hard to lecture and and show subtitles
