Language becomes a key problem for those whose English is not a first language.

Thanks for sharing this example of customized instruction. By "reading" the student you were able to provide the exact support that was needed at the time it was needed.

Indeed, recently I had a student who did not understand English adeptly. I used a more hands-on approach to delivering skill based outcomes. I found the student compensated with visual and tactile abilities to acquire new skills.

Much learning is build on connections and associations. Your method of letting other students share those connections in their own words is a great way of build bridges to their language development.

In the classes I teach, English is not the first langauge of most of my students. I have found it helpful for students to work together and explain concepts they do not understand to each other. Oftentimes I am using a English word that they are familar with so having another student explain it in their owns words can be helpful. This also gives other students an opportunity to show understanding.
