Analyzing Student Needs

Often times we have a student who has special needs and many times we are not capable of assisting these student of need. How does one accomodate these needs while trying to dedicate your time equally amongst your class? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Glenn

Hi Paul,
I understand where you are coming from. This is a real challenge for all of us when this happens. These students need to be referred back to the student services office for assessment so a baseline can be established on that individual. The student may need to be placed in a tutoring program so he/she can develop the needed academic proficiency. You are right you can't teach a person to read at the required level while also teaching a course leading to career development.

I am all for trying to find time and resources for students with special needs. My concern is when admissions takes in a student who is illiterate. Now that is a challenge that I am not equipped to handle. I can't take time to teach someone in a college class the seemly simple task of being able to read. It is pretty much the same thing with basic math. I can't teach some of the topics I need to teach if I am explaining what 6x8 means. I am really doing more venting than anything, but it is a concern.

Thanks

follow chain of command.

At the beggining of class try checking in with the students that you know need more attention then keep an eye on these individuals through out class and check in with them consistently.

I try to put time aside for those student like a skill lab, where we are not so press for time providing the schedule work for this type of activities.

Hi Glenn,
If the student as a result of his/her disabilities is unable to do the required course work then you should try to provide instructional support to them. If this is not sufficient then talk with school officials about support services that the college offers. This may include tutors, mentors or other supports that will help the student to be successful.
