Getting to know your students

I find it takes some time to really get to know where students are coming from - not just the fist session but fairly well in the quarter. Most students appreciate and respond well when the discussion can be, at least in part, about them so I like to have them apply course concepts around their experience - the bonus is that they all learn so much from each other. Hi Darla,
Welcome to the profession. I hope you have a very rewarding and exciting career as an instructor. The key is being excited about what you are teaching and prepared to teach it. Look for ways to improve your instructional abilities each time you teach the course and you will be surprised at how quickly you will become an effective instructor.

I'm new to the Instructor postion, so I'm learning as well. I Like to play games in my class so we can discuss some of outside life so I can get to know a little more about my students and know their needs.

i totally see what your saying sometimes i like when they respond with the learning subject matter

on the first day of each class, I go around the room and ask the student to tell the class their name, and whrere are they curren tly working at, if they are working. This allows me to get to know a little bit about their day proir to class alos it is a good networking tool for tother students who are looking for ajob.

I agree with Sara that it does take some time to get to know the students and once you do the learning is accelerated.

It is much harder to get to know an online student. Student introductions in the first unit help this process.
