What about when they mix?

I have a lot of students who show attributes of both age and disability issues where they are both adult learners and also they had problems when they were in school decades ago.

How do all of you handle students who still have the problems they had 30 years ago but have even more complexes about them now?

Hi Pat,
Thank you for sharing your story and how you use it to inspire your students. This is what being a model is all about

I have my own life testimony with some physical complications, at times evident to the students (one visual that actually makes this extended reading session difficult.)I am also now one of the elders :-). I seem to have a "following" of these challenged students- "if SHE can do it so can I". I try to be professional in my sharing, encouraging, and also admire the strength and abilities of those without difficulties so that I am not preceived as bias. pj

Hi John,
These learners can be a challenge for sure. Without knowing more about the complexes or challenges they are bringing to the class it is hard to offer suggestions. What I do when I have challenging students is to try and break down the various issues they have into sections so I can work with the positive aspects of their abilities and try to circumvent those issues that disrupt their learning process. Always a challenge because student is unique in what life experiences they bring to class.
