Understanding Your Students Needs
I always make it a priority to monitor and get to know each of my students so I can stay in tune with their individual progress and needs. I make myself approachable and available to them for any questions they might have and tutoring when needed. I ask my students on an individual basis how their class experience is going for them to also get a feel for their progress. I believe by showing students you care about there progress and address their needs you aid in retention.
This is a great module to remind you of all the frustrations that students go through. It makes you realize that listening is the best way to connect with your students.
Always let your students know that you can't read their minds, you can only ask questions to access what they have learned. In my opinion student's need to be held responsible for their education. You get out of it what you put into it!
I also like to use these techniques with my students. Well said. I believe showing a student that you care about their success, and are approachable and sincere, are great qualities in an educator.
Hi Daniel,
Exactly right. We have to continually read our students so we can channel the instructional strategies that will be most effective for them.

I think the whole point of this module is that we need to be in tune with ALL of our students. If we start to treat the students like they are just another number, it will be obvious to them and they will instantly lose respect for you.
Hi Rob,
You are right. I am starting a new class next week with a large enrollment. I am already planning on how I can develop rapport with the different students as well make sure I give the students prompt feedback on all their work. I wish the class was half as large but it isn't so my challenge is to make it personal for each student in a global way.

Hi Gary,
This may seem obvious, butI have found that it is much easier to keep up with the individual student's needs in smaller classes. Once the class size gets too large, I believe it is a matter of performing triage to find the students that need the most help.
Hi Bruce,
You make a very good point concerning the need to stay current with your students. By spending a few minutes each day interacting with the students you can develop a feel for where they are at and what needs they might have. This way you can be active in helping them rather than reactive which may be too late.

Keeping track of the students is a day to day thing. One day a students education is the important thing, then the next day the important thing is rent.
If you keep track of the student, then you can provide them with info on where to find help in their money problem.
Hi Donald,
Right you are about the need to show your students that you are caring and approachable. This way when students are uncertain about an assignment or upcoming quiz they will feel comfortable coming to you and asking questions. This is what student rapport is all about.
