Students with Challenges
What is the most common challenge that you help your students with on a regular basis?
Taylor,
Good approach because courses that students have already created fear about are challenges to teach. Certain science and math courses fall into this category. So the more support you can give and the greater you can project your personality into the content the greater their success is going to be. You are doing that with your approach and as a result you are gaining engaged students.

I think one of my challenges is that many students come to my class with a bias against electronic courses because it is a hard class to understand. I try to teach in a method that is easy to understand and I try to give practical examples of why it is important to understand the information. I also try to be encouraging and tell them that I will try my best to give more explanations of the material if they want to stay longer either before or after class is over.
David,
Keep up the encouragement. By the students knowing you are there to support them they may try harder to be successful in their studies and test scores. Also, do what you can to help them value the content they are learning so they will work harder on their tests.

One of the greatest challenges I face is students reaction to poor test scores. I try to be as encouraging as possible, and maintain a positive outlook throughout the class. I try to make myself available for additional help, and I also keep a close eye on my students progress.
Hi Steve,
The challenge that I see most of the time from students coming into the FastLane is not being able to read well. You have to take your time with these students, you find that there are a lot of words that they don’t understand, or don’t know what they mean. We spend a lot of time explaining what the word or words mean. Some have fears about going out into the real world and finding a job. I always tell them that there is a job out there in the automotive field for them; they just have to look along with everybody else. I also tell them that they should take a reading course, which will not only help them in the field, but also help them overcome some of their pre existing fears. I tell them that it is a big world, and that there is a place for them, they just have to find it. These students look to the FastLane for help...we can solve some of their problems, but not all of their problems. They must be willing to help themselves first. By pairing the younger students off with the older students seems to help as well. They mimic what they see.

Hi David,
This is a great idea because as we both know many of the students do not have note taking skills. They need to learn how to recognize important points and get them down in their notes. You are providing them with a needed skill set with your note taking primer.
Gary
Well I start with note taking, then we talk about being organized, A student might say I don’t have time to study I tell them well tell me everything you do in a day maybe I can help. Usually there is always time and I help them manage their time better.
I spend time at the beginning of every phase to help and sometimes introduce note taking. Main topic and several subtopics. Studying later is so much easier.
Hi Richard,
This is so true. Your strategy of putting them into smaller groups and helping them to get to know each other better is a good way of keeping them involved and engaged in the learning process.

We are face with many challenges but the one that we deal with the most is just being accepted. Feeling accepted is something every student or person needs both in school and on the job. Our class sizes are 12 to 15 students and we break them up in teams of three or four. We try to mix age groups and mix experience levels so the ones with less experience have a mentor to go to. This also helps in completion times being very close giving them more confidence in the the project they are completing.
The most common challenge I have is to find that common ground where I can present the subject in a way that the student can process it and make sense of it.
retaining the days lesson and use that subject in a lab setting. i really try to make the part of that lesson rememberable. something to relate to helps alot, asking questions and giving the class a happy feeling about the subject.
most of the students i see i find they need guidance and structure for the everyday consurns of life and school needing to share time with books, friends, family. the instructor can be a person that is looking from the outside and can suggest a solustion to the consurn.
try to stay on task and making sure thay are learning the material that they are being taught are you giving them the attention needed to help them learn
getting them to a point where they think they can
really be sucessful at this. I find that treating them as the person you expect them to become rather than necessaraly who they are is a big step in them gaining the confidence they need to suceed!
The most common challenge I run into with students is keeping everyone learning at the same level. When every class has students that are very advanced and others that struggle with the same subject. It is fun to be able to help them all.
Understanding how to answer a test question. I help them understand not to read into the question. Read it and asnwer it. I also tell them about the wording they need to look out for such as always, may, most, these words tend to cause confusing.
I'd Say that one of the most common problems we face here at UTI is the young student who is hiperactive. He/She never was taught the patience needed to learn.
When he starts to get disruptive, instead of punishment I try to get him involved in a projest that allows him to take a brake from the current lecture or lab while providing an additional view of the subject for the whole class. Usually I find after a time or two he will settle down and do his best to stay with the regular program. Chuck Peters
One of the biggest challenges i come across is confidence in thier own skillset. Often students have a problem with simple tasks because they are not confident in the skills that they have achieved in school. but with a lot of positve reinforcement, continuous application through hands on tasks and consistent testing to the skillset helps.
