I agree that one has to monitor the situation and may assign a leadership role to a more mature person in the group; which may be the older student, but not necessarily.

This is a good point. The key is to find balance in bringing all of the students into the class. Using the life experiences of the older students along with the enthusiasm of the younger students and you have a win win for everyone.

I find that many times the younger students are more familiar with the material and as such naturally assume more of a leadership role in group assignments. What they lack in worldly experience they more than make up for with enthusiasm and knowledge of more recent technologies.
With the various students and age differences I have taught, I offten find that some of the younger and less experinced students may show a high level of maturity and learning out come than say the older and more experinced students. I don't think that just "age" is a factor high.
