how to make adult learns feel ok with comming back to school

make materials so everyone can learn and understand

Lavetta,
It is true about the need for life long learning. Also, good point about the development of mutual respect for different age groups found within a class.

I tell students/individuals that no person is too old to return to school and learn. Learning something new each day is what keeps our brains active and challenged. Also, many younger (traditional) students look up to non-traditional students in a class and respect them.

Hi William,
What great advice you were given by your adviser. By having this information you were able to find your comfort zone within the class and be successful in school. We need to make sure we share this same advice with our non-traditional students and help to set them at ease.

I can relate to this issue because I returned to graduate school at an older age following a long absence from school. I definitely felt the pressure of having to perform like the 20-somethings who comprised most of the student population and felt like I could not keep up with the rigorous pace of grad school. Finally, my advisor counseled me to remember that this was my education, to own it and concentrate on what I wanted to get out of it. His advice was right on the mark and freed me to learn what I wanted without competing with the younger students who had different learning needs.

I try to be as helpful as I can be, encourage them to always do their best no matter what age they are,and I also try to make the learning material easy to understand.
