understanding each student

All the students you will encounter will at one point or another change the way you deliver your materials. Age, disabillties and unexepected circumstanses can create challanges. understanding what there needs are will enable you to make a strong connection and get through each student. and thats they sign of a well sesoned teacher

I find that getting a little backgrownd information from my students helpls me greatly to understand what they are going through at home.
which help me see how they act in school

Hi Charisma,
This is such an important part of career success. The more students can learn how to work with diverse groups the more they are going to be able to be successful in the work place.
Gary

Students in career colleges are just as diverse as in the workplace. In my class we discuss cultural diversity as well as communication which helps the students to better handle working in a diverse community. We also do a lot of group work which encourages working in a diverse atmosphere.

Hi Richard,
Good approach. This is very valuable to students. They like the personal attention and the fact that you care enough about them to speak with them individually.
Gary

The students I work with come from all different age groups and education backgrounds. I make an effort to visit with each student privately to best understand thier needs and motivation. The students respond in a positive manner and they then seem open to more conversation with me.

I teach for 3 different online colleges and have taught several on campus classes at a career university. As part of my on campus classes, I always had the students introduce themselves, give a little bit about their background, what they are studying and what their career goals are. Two of the online schools I teach for include an Introduction Thread which provides similar information. I find it much easier to understand a student when this type of information is provided. Often, students will say they don't understand why they have to take my class and that gives my an opportunity to get in front of frustration issues.

Hi John,
Good point. I saw a plaque that read "You are not learning when you are talking." and I really believe this. Students like instructors that are good listeners because they know they are investing in them and their success.
Gary

Being a good questioner and being a good listener is the first steps to understanding your students. Then apply what you've learned to tailoring a specific program for them

I agree the more we underestand our students the better we can reach them in an educational setting. I tend to be more recpetive to an instructor if they take the time to understand me as an individual.

Hi Joe,
Good student feedback can be very valuable in instructional planning and development. The better we know our students and have feedback from them the more accurate we can be with our instruction.
Gary

I think the key to understanding students as to whether they are retaining anything in class has to be by implamenting feedback from the students and only then can any assesment of that student be properly made. feedback such good question techincs can be very benificial .
