Sometimes a younger student may have a better understanding of the subject covered.

Very true! It also challenges them to get more involved in the process.

I also agree. Sometimes when you have more experienced students with least experienced students together, it tends to encourage the least experienced students to have more confidence in becoming the leaders through encouragement from others.

I agree with this method. However, I also believe that the instructor should understand how each student learn. For example, one student may be a visual learner, whereas, another student may be a tactile kinestic learner. Bringing these various learning styles together, will enhance the learning process for all of the students.

Understanding the learning characteristics of your students helps you effectively plan your lessons. It allows you to tailor your lessons to fit the learning styles and demographic backgrounds of your students. This helps foster student success.

so true.... great feedback.. i like the concept

it helps tremendously in the application as we instruct the students

We need to understand the learner characteristics so to know how to present the material.

By understanding learner charachteristics, an instructor can more effectively plan lessons or make adjustments in learning activities and assessments.

I really agree with this concept. It can allow them to build their skills.

Definetly! With out know your students your teaching abilities would be severely hampered. If your teaching is hampered so is the learning process.

Knowing the characteristics of the learners in my class helps me plan activities that will match their learning styles and maximize their learning.

Understanding the learner is an integral part in planning since it will likely increase the retention of information of the learners. Often times at the beginning it can be difficult since it takes time to figure out the student's way of understanding. Small challenge for a hopefully positive result.

Gary,

It is always necessary for the engaged instructor to know their audiance. While I belive that one shoudl refrain from talking down to anyone, at times it is necessary to define terms in very subtle and non-threatening ways to the uniniiiated student. Joe

Hi Ulises,
You have offered some very good advice for all of us. The more we know about our students the more accurately we can target our instruction. We can customize our approach in a way that keeps the students focused on learning and career development.
Gary

Hi All,
By listening to your students and asking questions about their life experiences you are creating a connection with them. This starts the development of rapport and respect which leads to increased student engagement. The more we learn about our students the more effective we can be with our instruction. Keep up the good work.

This helps determine which variety of activities to do. If several students are good at listening and taking notes, I would make sure I involved some lecture at some point during the week. There may be students who are introverted and don't love group activities. Knowing this, I can make sure I don't over-do this (although it is necessary to try all methods because students learn by stepping out of their comfort zone as well).

Each time I teach a class it is different because the people that are in that class are different and the way they learn is different. Part of the first day is spent getting to know the class so I can better understand how to approach them when trying to teach a ne concept to them.

You really need to focus on how the students can grasp the material in different ways.
