Supporting Students
Hello Everyone,
Supporting students at all age levels and in all career goals in an important aspect within the instructional setting. It is important to validate students' progress and ensure that the feedback provided is detailed and specific to the task at hand. It is also important to use the student's name within the feedback to ensure personalization of the material.
Harold,
Right you are because this way everyone sees that they are contributing to the learning that is occurring.

I agree that all age levels are important. It provides a wealth of real life experiences for all to draw from.
Hello Frank! I definitely agree with your philosophy of supporting students within the instructional setting. My focus is teaching students clinical skills and I started something that seemed to be very well accepted by everyone. I call it "Benchmarks of Success". I used a 'time line' approach beginning with their first class and then drew a "you are here" arrow on the white board which was at the midterm point of the course. I had the students (as a class) reflect on their goals, aspirations, concerns and fears on that first day and to see how far they had come in several weeks. We had a lively discussion as everyone was eager to share their success stories. By the end of the course, we put together another time line and the students were surprised how much they had learned and mastered in a course that most felt would be very demanding and challenging. I also communicate personally with students using "Success points". This feedback is detailed and specific to that individual student and is done on a much more frequent basis. I speak to the student personally as well as electronically using Engrade messages.
This validation of student progress has been such a great source of encouragement and I can see the glow in the students' faces that someone believes in them and that they have the potential and capability to be successful.
Trina,
Good check for yourself. I know you will like the results you get from your students when you do this.

I get so busy trying to sort out the flaws in people work that I forget to praise the qualities. Not Good! I need to remember positive re-enforcement.
Petya,
Encouragement and some study strategies are very helpful to students when they first start in school. Many of them do not know how to take notes or to study for tests. These kinds of supports are very valuable in helping the students move forward in their learning efforts.

It is important to support our students or as I usually say to give them a hand. But not in term to do their homework but to encourage them and to provide guidelines to them how to work in class, in an academic environment.
Thank you for this information. As a new teacher I can use all the tips I can get. I will use this.
