Adult learners

I find that adult learners are more focused and care more about their grades. They constantly want feedback and ways to improve their learning skills. What experiences have you had?

adult learners generaly focus more and ask a lot more questions about the class

Dena,
Good analysis and consistent with how my students see a course. The younger ones feel "entitled" to an A because they paid tuition and the older students generally lack confidence in their abilities to be successful in the course. I blend them through learning groups and this helps both sectors develop an appreciation for each person can contribute to the course.

As an adult learner myself, I understand the complex obligations that are associated with returning to college after a period of time out of school. I agree that they want constant feedback, I feel that this is connected to the overall goals of an adult, to be productive and independent, but at the same time, looking to the instructors for that extra guidance and assurance.I have found that the younger group of students that I have dealt with, have the "give it to me" attitude, as opposed to the "I want this for me".

Ron,
This has been my experience with adult learners as well. They bring rich and varied life experiences and I strive to enable them to use those experiences while being successful in the class. When they get to use their life experiences their self confidence increases and they start to realize that they can pass the class and that they are moving toward their career goals. When this happens I really enjoy being an instructor because I know I am having an impact on their lives.

I agree that the adult learners are more focused but some have problems that they need help with because they have been out of school for so long.
They also don't have any good feelings toward the young students that don't care about learning because mom and dad are paying the bill.

I think this is also because adults are more focused on the goals they want to achieve.

Letrice,
This has been my experience as well so it is important that we program into our instructional planning adequate reinforcement points for our adult learners.
