Future Learning Characteristics

I have noticed over the years how learning students' characteristics have changed in students in comparison to students' learning characteristics of 15 years ago. As technology advances teachers must present new and more effective ways to instruct other than the classic chalkboard. This idea is slightly of subject but highly fascinating.

Todd,
Good point and this is why it is important to find a balance in our approach while keeping the engagement factor high with our content.

Harnessing technology can be very helpful at presenting materials to studenst especially those with disabilities such as sight or hearing loss. However they can be a disadvantage at the same time for a tactile learners.

ANNE,
This has been my experience as well. They make the connection between the course content and application via these stories and examples. So the more you can share with them the higher their cognitive retention is going to be.

As a Nursing instructor I have used Power Point U-Tube videos, games, and acting out situations, but what the students tend to remember the most is the actual patient experiences that were shared. It puts a reality to the book information they need to learn. I am amazed on how many students put music on via ear plugs and read and do their work. Sometimes it is challenging to try new ways to keep ahead of students who are exposed to multimedia all day long.

Sonja,
The challenge of technology is to keep pace with it and integrate it into our instructional delivery. We shouldn't use technology just because it is there but because it increases the value and clarity of our instructional delivery. Picking the right technology to do this is an ongoing effort for sure.

Wow well stated. Its not like it used to be. I now use the internet and a Smart Board in the classroom. Technology has come into the classroom.

Larry,
You raise a good point and one that we instructors need to consider as we develop our delivery format. We need to use technology but not let it dictate nor over whelm good teaching.
