ED 102

When working with differnt age groups it is a good idea to be flexible and remember the style of teaching you had used from prior experiences working with these particular groups. Try to instill the importance of their being able to comprehend and discuss the subject as interpreted
by their range of undersanding at their chronological age.

Gregrey,
This is the foundation of being a model for students. Instructors need to reflect professional standards through dress, conduct, language and behavior at all times if they are going to earn the respect of students. Thank you for making this point.

If you can not follow the rules of the classroom how can you expect the students to follow them. This is true with your appearance and your mannerisms. If you look like you do not care and act like you do not care the students will not care about learning. So make sure you can project your passion about the subject or you will not have successful students.

Sarah,
This is such a major part of being an instructor. If we do not model the dress, behavior, language and conduct we expect then our students will not respect nor follow our lead.

I agree with being a demonstrating professionalism to the students. It is impossible to expect respect when the instructor is not being professional. It will also help motivate students if the instructor is passionate about the career.

Sandra,
Glad this module was of help to you. You are greatly expanding your professional development as a result of taking courses like this and looking for ways you can expand your skill sets. Keep up the good work and I wish you continued teaching success.

Yes, this module mentioned many ways to help students feel supported and engaged. I really liked the "class cards" tip mentioned in the Harvard video. I never thought to have a student list their work history and now see how the information can be very useful in lesson planning. (I also never knew there was an "--ogy" for adult education, andragogy!) I also thought it was a good idea to pause in lectures for understanding checks for English language learners as well as helpful for the cognitively challenged. I forgot how important it is for the 18-20 year old student to fit in socially.

Daniel,
Being a model of the profession through dress, conduct and language. Be organized, prepared and on time. Demonstrate that you have passion for your content and are excited about teaching it. Each of the elements sends a message to students that they have a dedicated professional as their teacher and this is the foundation for respect.

You mentioned Respect from the students. What are some ways that we as intructors can earn that from them?

Sonia,
Good information about how to manage the classroom with a diverse learning group. Each student need to feel supported and engaged in the course. From there it is a building process through respect and rapport.
