Student Characteristics
I have always found it importnant to sympathetic to everyone and treat everyone with the same respect i wish to be treated.
Sonny,
By setting clear expectations and organizing the class into a learning unit students will respect the instructor. As for not accepting any other opinions, solutions or input from adults then the "My way or highway" will not work. They have life experiences that can be shared with other students that may lead to enhanced learning. I personally look forward to this type of input each class session. I do make it clear that I will not compromise on course standards as I am helping to prepare them for a career that they have chosen to enter and be successful in.

I agree with this statement. However, I have seen some instructors pull, "My way or highway" mentality. Does this high school approach work in career schools?
David,
For sure. Can't imagine what it would be like to teach in such a situation.

Carrette,
Thank you for the KEEP acronym. Like it and how it can impact the preparation of students. They need to keep in mind as they progress through their career program. KEEP is what will get them the job they want and help them to enjoy the career for which they are trained.

I think that goes without saying. Without mutual respect, the classroom will be a disaster.
Understanding how students think as a result of the needs they have is very important. Many of my older students always express the need to be competent in the new career path they have taken. They desperately want to succeed and do well and as such, they seek (conscious and subconsciously) for the reassurance that they will be able to go on the field and do well. They yearn for encouragement and for someone to believe in them. I keep on my board the acronym KEEP: Knowledge, Effective, Efficient, Proficient. I tell them that these are the kind of student I am graduating from my class and I am expecting nothing less because they all have the ability to live the acronym which is our class motto. I give a brief motivational speech or statement every morning and hold them accountable to keep the positive vibe flowing for the day.
