Retention

Retention is so important when it comes to teaching young and older adults. You have to be on your toes and be prepared everyday in class.

Older students seem to want to learn as much as possable but the issue is finding a gob in their field becouse of the their age.

Renee,
This is a key point to remember as you are working with adults. Early success in the course and instructor support goes a long way in building their confidence.

Older students have more personal responsibilities. That has to be taken into account when working with them. Validate their capabilities in all of their undertakings and build trust and understanding.

Rhonda,
How do you do that with your students? Thanks for your input on this.

Yes there needs to be a point in time where you gain the students trust and confidence.

Priscilla,
I have seen this with many of my older students. They need to be validated on a regular basis so they see that they are being successful and can achieve what they want in terms of career development.

Older student that even when making good grades still seem to lack confidence due to their age.

EDWARD,
Sometimes it seems we are full time cheerleaders for sure. We need to make sure to keep this up as I know you have experienced in your own teaching. Adults need early success and continual support as they build their confidence.

I have also seen with my older student a lack of confidence even after a good grade they need to head it after they see it. I feel like a cheer leader.

Stephen,
A big thing with my older students is a lack of confidence and study skills. They need to build some confidence and get a method of studying started for themselves. I used guided notes as a support for these students to help them zero in on the key concepts they need to learn.

I agree. For some adult learners the time away from school could be as long as a decade. So they need to be reintroduced to school and expectations.

Shaun,
A proper attitude is catching so we need to bring excitement about our content to class each time it meets.

I agree you also need to come in with the proper attitude to set the tone for the day.
