Rapport
When I think of rapport, I can't help but think of the business world and how important this is to success. As an instructor, building rapport with students accomplishes the same things as in the business world. This helps build trust, respect, creadibility, and understanding. To be a sussessful instructor rapport must be established and maintained a positive relationship with instructor and student.
There is no doubt that building rapport with students helps with student achievement. They are receptive to suggestions and instruction.
I believe this helps students to know that you really care about them, their future, and their success.
I agree totally that rapport should be implemented in the same manner whether it is in a classroom or within an organization. Establishing a rapport with your students give you instant trust and understanding, When I trust someone, I find I am more willing andf able to learn from them.
Hi Bruce,
Haven't had the problem you describe. I have found that by just greeting a student or chatting with him or her before class or during breaks really helps to develop rapport with such students. By making sure I talk to them all I don't have any problems with any of them thinking I have a favorite. Keep the conversation light and your students will respect what you are trying to do in getting to know them better.

HELLO ALL, I AGREE WITH NEIL IN THIS ARENA.IT IS UP TO THE STUDENT TO BUILD RAPPORT WITH THE INSTRUCTOR.I FIND THAT WHEN I SPEEK TO JUST ONE STUDENT THEY ALL TEND TO GATHER AROUND AND LISTEN IN THINKING THEY ARE GOING TO MISS SOMETHING. I NEED TO SPEEK TO THEM AS A GROUP,THAT IS WHY IT IS DIFFICULT TO BUILD INDIVIDUAL RAPPORT WITHOUT SHOWING FAVORITISM.
Building rapport does directly relate to the professional world. It is also just as important for the student to build a rapport with the instructor as it is for the instructor with the student. The instructor needs to feel confident that a student can be trusted in their ability and motivation to transfer their education to a professional setting.
Hi Andy,
This is the connection students need to see as well. Not only do instructors need to work on developing rapport with students but show students how they can develop rapport with their customers, patients, etc. You have made an excellent point for all of us to consider.
