Keeping the excitement going
I often like to bring in guest speakers who provide "working lunches". This provided some sense of how the workforce operates and what is required on the job.
Charles,
I am a big fan of using guest speakers and field trips for the reasons you mention. They are really powerful motivators.

this is a great idea, i have seen other instructors do it with great success. i would like to add that a field trip could have the same effect. it's a good break from the class room and lab and let's them see what they are working toward.
Heather,
I am a big user of guest speakers. They validate the content I am sharing with my students. So keep up the good work of using a guest speaker that tells it like it is and shows the students where they can go with their careers.

In my laboratory skills class, one of the competencies that the medical assisting students learn is how to perform a venipuncture in order to collect blood from a patient. I invited a friend who is a medical assistant/phlebotomist to come and speak to our class as well offer 'tips of the trade' when it comes to drawing blood from patients. She was received with great enthusiasm and the students were thrilled that they could ask so many questions about the role of medical assistants in the "real world" and get answers from an expert. The students also appreciated the individualized attention the guest gave each of them as they practiced their venipunctures. My friend has been a guest speaker in my classes for over a year now and the students benefit so much from this opportunity. Guest speaker experiences give my students an encouraging boost and certainly provide a "spark" to keep the excitement going.
Thats a good idea.
What would you success for the Musclar skeltal system ? or Growth and development?

Nicole,
Guest speakers are a great validation tool. Even when they cover the same points that you have covered they are valued by the students because the information comes from someone from the field.

I think that would be very helpful to bring in a guest speaker who is in the same field as what the students are in school for. That would give them a chance t ask questions and see how the speaker responds to them.
This is a very good Idea. I will also put this in practice.
