Assessment
I always try to get feedback to students on tests grades that very same day or the next day at the latest. It keeps them excited or helps them realize where they need to focus their attention.
Susan,
I think this is a good way to provide immediate feedback but also gives you time to complete the total grading process so you can give the final results back at another class session.

I agree students like to have their grades with 24 hours. What I do in class is go over the exam so that if students have questions about the chosen answer we can discuss it at that time. It takes about 10 minutes away from class but it is still a learning activity for them.
Cory,
Good point because you are determining if the students learned the content for short term use, i.e. quiz or if they integrated it into their working memory for use later on. By learning this you can determine where to place your emphasis for the key concepts of the course.

I agree it is a good idea but I like to go back after a couple weeks and ask a couple questions about the test and see if they have retained the information. I believe it gives a very good scope on comprehension of material and also helps you know if you need to touch on certain subjects again
Jessica,
Good point. Excitement like this keeps the students and you coming back to the classroom.

It motivates me when I see how excited my students get when they do well.
Katessa,
Good comments about being realistic in relation to giving student feedback. Student feedback should be given as quickly as is possible and this should be within the time constraints and all other factors that challenges instructors. Also, a stressed and burned out instructor is of no value to anyone so I commend you for striving to find that balance between your personal and professional life.

I believe that students are more interested in a class and their development when they are able to get their grades along with feedback within a reasonable amount of time. Being that I teach quite a few classes and have a large amount of students in all of them, I can no longer grade essay exams and return them within one day. I now give my students at least one week to prepare their essay exams and then I request at least one week to return their information to them. It does not take me a week always, but the ability to not stress myself out or stay up really late at night grading essays has given me a great boundary between my professional life and my personal life.
Dana,
Good for you. It is my goal as well because of the reasons you state. They like to know how they did and were they stand in the course.
