I ask my students to write down one thing they learned new out of the class that day and it is their ticket out the door
I do a similar task with my students. But I ask they to compile a list of this tidbits and then share them at the end of the semester.

I like to also have the students come in with a token activity, i.e. homework problem, news article, or key term, to have them discuss when they first come to class as well. This helps bridge the gap between the end of a lecture and the start of another.

Good idea. They are going to be looking for that new thing throughout the class so their can punch their "ticket".
