Positve Feedback
Sometimes when I'm bogged down with grading I have to pause and remind myself that each student needs to see something positive even if they handed in garbage.
at the begining of each semester I ask the students to write about teir hopes and aspirations and the goals they want to reach.
I keep those to pull on when a student veer away from the goal .
I agree that positive feed back can be use to movate even the most unmotaviated student try to find something positive to say to the student about his or her work it is an efective methode
Hi Scott,
Meeting of deadlines is something that our students have to learn as deadline meeting will be a part of their success or failure in the work world. The more we can get them to understand this the better prepared they will be when out working. Keep pounding away, it is for their good.

Yes, I do see that too; However I really try to pound it into the students to get their homework in to give equal opportunity to all
Hi Scott,
I like this method a lot. It is low risk and gives the students the opportunity for individual feedback from the instructor. They can the input and use it to improve their final draft of their projects. One of the things that bug me with this method is that my best students always take advantage of this while the students that are in the need of most help seldom do and as a result they get only opportunity for evaluation.

I tell my students they have a week to turn in assigments before next class meeting.
I also inform them if they get me the homework sooner, I can take look at it to review; I then usually tell them good or great job; however you just need to watch out for this or that. I give them the opportunity to take the advice on how to correct and resubmit with the corrections for full credit.
I will let students know that they need to do the assignment again. I give positive feedback when they turn in the corrected assignment.
Hi Heather,
You shouldn't have to give positive feedback unless it is earned. Look for the little things that are done correctly if the over all effort is garbage. Giving positive feedback on something that does not meet the standards of the course is unfair to the students and you. You can offer suggestions on ways they can improve and provide support for their efforts. It at that point then the effort is all up to them. They have to decide if they are going to be successful or not.

Yes that can be a difficult thing to deal with. But if this is happening on a normal basis, then something needs to be addressed.
It can be very difficult for me to give positive feedback when they hand in garbage!
I always try to find something positive to say even about terrible work. We are there to encourage them. The ones that do not get that are usually the ones that drop out.
