Ask students to share what works best for them - if a certain procedure works for them, it likely will work for others. This makes the student eager to share...
Very well put. I also ask students for their own experiances.
Hi Bobbe,
This is a part of the instructional process for students. Understanding what the real world is going to be like when they are out working. Instructors do a great favor for their students if they provide the information you mentioned in your forum comment.

Be very informative about what they can expect after finishing their studies for whatever their challenged field is by letting them know all the pros -- some cons, monetary factors, rewards, how their efforts/studies will pay off in the end. Do little workshops covering what will be expected of them, and have the students portray the players in their filed on the actual job. They end up partaking in what will be expected of them when they have passed all their requirements and are actually working in the field.
Hi Seth,
This is a good way to connect the dots for students as well. They can see how the course is going to unfold and what they will need to do to be successful. This gives them a vision of what is going to come.

Bringing in real life stories or situations to illustrate a point. Also, encouraging the students to do the same -- we all learn from these real life stories. They can be motivating on how not to do something as well as how to do and improve a situation.
Establishing student/personal goals for their performance in the class on the first day can be a good tool. Being able to refer to these goals throughout the term helps to keep the student on task and motivated to complete their work.
perhaps allow the students to come and shadow the instructor at the work place so they can see how the schooling fits in with the classroom learning.
As you are explaining the topic, provide examples of how the students will benefit and use the information given in future work situations. Sharing how you, the instructor, have used the information in the past can be motivating, too.
Hi Ted,
What are some of the ways that you show them their future through the fulfilling and fun things they will encounter in their careers?

Hi Tamara,
In bringing in guest speakers what have you found to be the biggest impact they have made on your students?
Gary
I find effective motivation with student in my class is when I let them use there work or life storys to share with the class in some type of report to ther class.
Telling the student that there is something more excited the next day so they don't miss class and giving to them something new to do
Informing the student of the all the exciting, fulfilling, and fun things to expect in their careers.
Bringing in speakers with real work experiences.
Hi Sara,
Way to go in making it "real" for your students. They get to see the reason for the mock interview is not only to develop their interviewing skills but also to network in a way that has employment potential. That is as good as it gets.
Gary
I find my students are extremely motivated to complete an assignment when I share how this assignment affected a previous student in a positive way. For example, my students need to arrange a mock interview for themselves. Most of them dread it, but after I share that previous students have had actual job offers come as a result from the 'practice interview', they realize the opportunity could bring them what they want..a job offer!
I've found that students are motivated when they can apply what they already know to course concepts and when the feel that the information from class is relevant to the real world Sarah F.
