Motivating

I like to use examples when I lecture. When discussing a topic I always bring up my past work. I like to give examples for the students to understand what it is in the work place. I feel it motivates the student and also give them an understanding on what they get to learn out in the field.

Donna,
Adults are just taller kids. I use candy with my students. We have a lot of fun with the candy rewards while learning so much as we prepare for quizzes and do reviews. Keep the smiley faces coming.

Motivation is such a positive approach by example of others' stories in the field. And strong words of encouragement and praise toward the student is a huge motivator. Also I find by complimenting on just one small thing that they have done will bring a positive reaction from the student. I give smiley face stickers when they do something extra and make sure to thank them for stepping up.

Not only does it make it real it gives them paths and allows them to see that there may be more than directions that they can take there careers.

Douglas,
It is essential that we do this for our students. They need to be able to see relevancy and application to the content which in turn will show them the ROI for being in school.

Angelia,
Students like to hear stories about their instructors' career experiences. These stories help to make the content real for them.

Absolutely. If the students are not able to relate what they are learning (or attempting to learn) in class to the real world, less learning will take place.
Taking book knowledge and placing it in the real world is an excellent way to increase students' long term learning/knowledge base.

I feel the same way. Using past experiences in you lecture also helps to break up the lecture and allows time for discussion.

Tammie,
I am a big fan of this approach because as you have probably noticed they really perk up when you give them an example or share a story about your own career experiences. This helps to make the content real to them.
